Description:The relationship between HLA antigen frequencies and coalworkers' pneumoconiosis was investigated in 358 coal miners from West Virginia and Pennsylvania. The subjects were matched for age and years in mining, and were divided into three groups: those with progressive massive fibrosis; with simple coalworker's pneumoconiosis; and with no radiographic evidence of disease. Blood samples were collected over 30 months, and over 140 antisera were used to make antigen definitions. Blood group also was determined. No differences in antigen frequency were observed between the group with massive fibrosis and the group with simple pneumoconiosis. When these two groups were combined, HLA-A1 was significantly lower than in the control group. The authors conclude that there was a weak negative correlation between HLA-A1 and coalworkers' pneumoconiosis. Further study is recommended to confirm this relationship.
