Description:Air and bulk samples were collected at a New England tannery and analyzed for the presence of N-nitrosodimethylamine (62759) (NDMA). A total of 36 air samples and 27 bulk samples were collected over three visits to the facility. The greatest atmospheric concentration of NDMA was 47 micrograms per cubic meter and this was discovered in the retanning, coloring, and fat liquoring area. The average atmospheric concentration on the first two visits was 19 micrograms per cubic meter. Concentrations were reduced to 0.1 to 3.4 micrograms per cubic meter on the third visit after a thorough cleaning. Small quantities of NDMA were present in process and waste water. Only four bulk samples contained NDMA, and the highest concentration was 0.5 micrograms per cubic meter. The source of NDMA in the tannery was not identified. The authors recommend studies to determine the source of NDMA in tanneries, and the monitoring of tanneries in order to initiate corrective measures to reduce exposure to the known animal carcinogen.
