Description:Welding and brazing have no industry classification and are considered more generally as occupations that extend throughout many industries. Welding and brazing processes for joining metallic parts or objects by fusion are conducted by electric arc welding, gas welding resistance welding, brazing and soldering. Protective procedures are required to control hazards resulting from fumes, gases, radiant energy, noise, burns and the possibility of electrocution. The fumes result from volatilization of the metals and the non-metals heated. Carbon-monoxide (630080) and nitrogen- dioxide (10102440), and chlorine (7782505) from plastics are especially hazardous when welding takes place in confined spaces. Long exposure may cause a chronic bronchial cough. Lungs of welders may have deposits of iron-oxide (1332372) leading to siderosis. (Contract No. 210-77-0120) [Description provided by NIOSH]
