Description:The molecular structure, chemical abstracts service number, registry of toxic effects of chemical substances number, production figures and economic trends, uses, and producer and user data are given for methyl-mercaptan (74931), ethyl-mercaptan (75081), n-propyl- mercaptan (107039), n-butyl-mercaptan (109795), and t-butyl- mercaptan (75661). The biological effects of exposure are described, including target organs, acute, chronic, and human effects. The mercaptans damage the lungs, kidneys and liver, and irritate the eyes. Threshold limit values and other standards are given; they are all higher than the odor threshold, so that inadvertent exposure is unlikely. [Description provided by NIOSH]
