  A pilot study was conducted involving the medical examination of over 1000 painters, iron painters, sandblasters, paper hangers, dry wall construction workers and tapers, paint factory workers, titanium plant workers, wood finishers and floor tile sanders in Los Angeles, New York, Toledo, Patterson, N.J., and St. Louis in response to worker and union concern. Significant findings include widespread and troublesome central nervous system effects, general asbestos exposure and prevalence of many new chemicals with unknown carcinogenic, mutagenic or potential toxicity. Recommendations include control of asbestos exposure, including substitution with safer materials and identifying safe work practices; control and surveillance of work practices involving sandblasting to prevent fatal silicosis; further measurement and analysis of the environment and materials used in the painting trade; further study of the short and long term effects on the central nervous system; immediate investigation of possible mixed dust pneumoconiosis among painters as indicated by the abnormal x-ray and pulmonary function findings; investigation of the mortality of workers; carcinogenicity and mutagenicity studies on a priority basis of chemicals used in the formulation of paints and other materials used in the trade; studies of the etiological factors involved in the high incidence of accidents; long term toxicological studies of chemicals; and development of appropriate educational programs regarding known hazards.
