Description:To determine the prevalence of chronic pulmonary disease among current and former potroom workers employed in the aluminum (7429905) industry, two tests are combined - a standardized respiratory symptom questionnaire, and forced expiratory spirometry. Three subgroups of subjects with different exposure levels are compared with unexposed controls. The forced expiratory volume in one second and the forced vital capacity tests fail to show any differences between the two groups. The limitations of the study are discussed, but it is concluded that potroom workers do not incur a major risk of chronic pulmonary disease. [Description provided by NIOSH]
