Description:The hazardous characteristics of coal dust inhalation are discussed. The National Study of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis is a joint effort by the Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Public Health Service. Over 30 coal mines in various parts of the U.S. have been selected for study. All men employed in the selected mines have been or will be asked to undergo medical examination. The examination consists of a posterior-anterior and left lateral chest film and some simple tests of ventilatory capacity. Medical examinations are to be repeated at intervals of 5 years, except on the first occasion when there will be only a 3-year interval. Levels of respirable dust are to be determined, and a sufficient number of dust samples will be analyzed to estimate the influence of total ash, total combustibles, and total and free silica on the development and progression of pneumoconiosis. Pathological and biochemical studies have shown that, in addition to the correlation between radiological category and coal-dust content, there is an almost equally good relationship with the total mineral content of the lungs, although it is apparent that there are distinctive physiological abnormalities associated with different types of opacity. Many pneumoconioses are associated with changes in the fibrous proteins of the lungs, and it is commonly accepted that miners have a lower ventilatory capacity than do nonminers. The finding of reduced diffusing capacity in U.S. miners with the pinhead type of simple pneumoconiosis needs to be supplemented by further studies of oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange. Additional studies of pulmonary circulation also are recommended. [Description provided by NIOSH]
