Description:Morphology of distal airway cells, and the leukocyte recruitment phenomenon are studied after exposure of hamsters or guinea-pigs to dust or aerosol. Bronchial damage from inhaled materials may consist of epithelial cell vacuolization, nuclear extrusion and cellular extrusion, or polymorphonuclear leukocyte recruitment. Nonparticulate materials given as aerosols, particularly gossypol and paraquat (1910425), are deposited out to peripheral airways as judged by cell damage, while particles recruit leukocytes without producing ultrastructural damage to cells.
