Description:A steam volatile fluorescent material of mass 260, isolated from cotton mill dust or cotton bracts, is an in-vitro chemotaxin of the slow type for peritoneal polymorphonuclear cells in the absence of serum or complement. Guinea pig or rabbit peritoneal or rabbit alveolar macrophages do not respond chemotactically to the cotton lipid or to casein lipids, however, macrophage migration is accelerated by crude casein. Human serum inhibits both the slow type and fast type of chemotaxis. The relationship of cotton chemotaxin to byssinotic symptomatology is under study. [Description provided by NIOSH]
