Description:The mortality rate of Appalachian coal miners and ex-miners previously studied for the prevalence of coal's workers pneumoconiosis was investigated according to the effects of pneumoconiosis, years spent underground, cigarette smoking and obstructive lung disease. For active miners, mortality was 7 percent less than the expected death rate of the general male population of the United States, while the mortality of ex-miners was 24 percent greater than expected. Complicated pneumoconiosis, cigarette smoking, and airway obstruction were associated with premature death or excess mortality. [Description provided by NIOSH]
