Description:Electron microscope examination of the lungs of three underground coal miners and a boiler repairman at a power plant that burned bituminous coal shows large amounts of collagen, elastic fibers, and various types of particles including hard, dense needle like material, smooth angular pieces, large rectangular chunks with chatter marks, and granular aggregates. Pneumoconiosis is cited as the diagnosis in two of the coal miners, while the third died of undifferentiated bronchogenic carcinoma with widespread metastases. [Description provided by NIOSH]
