Description:

Laboratory studies and human studies are undertaken to determine the content of chromium (7440473), cobalt (7440484), and nickel (7440020) in cement samples and the etiological role of the metals in causing dermatitis in cement workers. Chromium is found in all samples, the concentration of water soluble hexavalent chromium representing only 0.03 percent of the total chromium present. Only one of 95 cement workers shows allergic hypersensitivity to chromium. None of the cement samples contains measurable cobalt and nickel, and none of the workers elicits positive reactions to cobalt and nickel. Three factors found responsible for the irritant nature of American cement are the alkalinity, abrasiveness, and hygroscopicity of wet cement. [Description provided by NIOSH]
