Description:The potential hazards of monoisopropanolamine (MIPA) (78966) and titanium-dioxide (1309633) are medically evaluated in workers in a large plant producing titanium-dioxide, along with an environmental evaluation of the work area through air sampling for total dust and respirable dust. Results indicate that MIPA or its substituent triethanolamine (102716) is toxic and represents a definite cutaneous hazard upon direct contact with the skin to unprotected workmen. Instances of primary irritant contact dermatitis due to direct skin exposure to the compound are identified, which disappeared with discontinuance. Titanium-dioxide is not found toxic. Safety recommendations include the use of protective clothing, implementation of a preventive maintenance program, dust removal and the use of respirators. [Description provided by NIOSH]
