Description:Sixteen workers in a cotton textile mill, suffering from reduction in respiratory function with exposure to cotton dust, are exposed to raw cottons and cottons preprocessed by heating, washing, and steaming to determine the effect of cleaning or deactivating the cotton on the prevention of byssinosis. Autoclaving cotton is the most successful treatment, reducing symptoms such as chest tightness and/or dyspnea, forced expiratory volume, and mean dust levels. Regressions calculated from raw and high capacity steaming trails indicate that at low dust levels steamed cotton dust is about 50% as biologically active as raw cotton dust.
