Description:Measurements of intermittent noise and hearing test data from U.S. Forest Service employees, engaged as chain saw operators, are reported in terms of types of intermittent exposures, resultant temporary threshold shifts, and subsequent hearing recovery. Hazard risks are related to proposed standards for intermittent noise; and the manner of saw operation is found to effect hearing more than model or saw size. Temporary hearing threshold shifts indicate some small risk, though the threshold shift returns to normal by the following morning. [Description provided by NIOSH]
