Description:Quasistatic measurements are made of the elastic properties of the lungs in older hemp workers to determine whether loss of elastic recoil in the lungs is an important factor in reducing the maximal expiratory flow of lungs, using a method that provides a close approximation of the true elastic lung recoil curve. Data are given for the physical characteristics, lung function, history of dyspnea, and smoking habits of the workers. Results indicate that loss of elastic recoil contributes to the decrease of maximal expiratory flow in hemp workers exposed to dust for many years, and that loss of parenchymal structure of the lungs occurs in the chronic stages of byssinosis of textile workers.
