Description:This paper presents a review of findings and describes six changes in pulmonary function directly attributable to simple coalworkers' pneumoconiosis (CWP). It is unlikely that any of these abnormalities by themselves are associated with significant pulmonary symptoms. The addition of those abnormalities to those caused by another mild unrelated pulmonary disease, chronic bronchitis, may result in the patient developing symptoms which he would not have were only one disease present. There is some evidence that inhalation of coal dust may produce a form of industrial bronchitis and it is likely that particles larger than the respirable dust fraction are responsible. Presently dust measurements are entirely directed at measuring the exposure to respirable dust and it cannot be assumed that because the respirable dust fraction is at an acceptable level that the larger dust particles are also at an acceptable level.
