Description:Analysis of wet-ashed and dry-ashed cigarettes, cigars, and pipe tobacco to determine wether significant amounts of cadmium and nickel were contained in the sidestream smoke which could be hazardous to nonsmokers as well as smokers. Cigarettes contained 1.56-1.96 micrograms cadmium and 4.25-7.55 micrograms nickel; cigar and pipe tobacco contained only 0.93-1.86 micrograms cadmium per gram tobacco. Data suggest that 38-50% of the cadmium and 11-33% of the nickel of cigarette tobacco is present in the sidestream smoke, indicating a health hazard to nonsmokers. [Description provided by NIOSH]
