Description:Description of a method by which the viability of Bordetella pertussis was preserved for periods as long as 45 months. The method involves the quick freezing of glycerol broth suspensions and subsequent storage at minus 70 degrees centigrade. This technique is useful in laboratories not equipped with lyophilization facilities; it renders periodic subculturing unnecessary. Data are presented on the viability of various strains of B. pertussis maintained over a period of many months by the deep freezing method described. [Description provided by NIOSH]
