Description:Paper presenting results of a laboratory study made under controlled environmental conditions to get accurate information on the magnitude of errors in the temperatures obtained by the sling psychrometer when it is used in the presence of high thermal radiation flux. A companion study is also made to determine the effect of wick length on wet bulb readings. The results are shown graphically. The effect of these temperature errors on the calculated heat exchange between a workman and the environment is found to be small, but that on heat stress index will vary considerably depending on the index used and the environmental conditions. The results of a study of the effect of wick length on wet bulb error due to stem conduction indicate that the wick should extend at least 0.8 inch above the top of the bulb to eliminate such errors.
