• Description:
  Quarterly reporting of blood lead levels began for the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in September of 1992. NIOSH established the Adult Blood Lead Epidemiology and Surveillance program in support of these efforts. Five additional states, Colorado, Michigan, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Utah, contributed to the surveillance effort, bringing to 17 the total number of states participating in quarterly reporting. Excessive lead (7439921) exposure was identified in the construction industry among bridge workers, workers conducting home paint removal, and workers performing paint removal on commercial superstructures such as water tanks. An interim final regulation was issued covering occupational exposures to lead in the construction industry. The regulation directs the US Environmental Protection Agency, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, CDC, and other agencies to ensure that workers engaged in lead paint removal are properly trained and that contractors are certified.
