Description:An industrial hygiene survey was conducted at the Kennecott Copper Company mine, mill, and smelter (SIC-3331) at Santa Rita and Hurley, New Mexico to evaluate the health hazards associated with these operations. The Chino Mine is located in Santa Rita, and is an open pit operation. Ore passes through the mill into primary and secondary crushers and is then further processed. Copper (7440508) concentrate is rotated in reverberatory furnaces and the final product, blister copper, is cast into ingots. All but one sample collected on the top of the reverberatory furnaces and converter aisle for sulfur-dioxide (7446095) were in excess of the allowed limit of 5ppm. The sample of parting compound collected for free silica (7631869) determination contained only 0.3% free silica. Samples collected for selenium (7782492) and arsenic (7440382) were well below the threshold limit values. Some of the samples taken were over the threshold limit for airborne dust. Recommendations included reducing dust levels at the top of the fine ore bin, reducing sulfur-dioxide levels in the reverberatory furnace and converter areas, sealing the walls separating the top of the fine ore bins from the ball mill area to make them dust tight, and repairing gaskets and rubber tubing in the molybdenum packaging operation.
