Description:Serious concerns with opioid use in construction started as far back as 2011. Leaders in the industry believe that high rates of occupational injuries and fatalities in construction might be a contributor. It is also precarious work, in the sense, that many workers have temporary employment and do not have paid time off or sick leave. Studies have shown that construction workers often work through the pain and don't seek help when they are suffering from mental health issues or substance use disorder. High demand, high stress, with a lot of bodily injuries combined with the availability of opioids creates an adverse working environment. We need to improve our understanding of how to get construction workers healthy and back to work safely.
