Description:There is great concern about the respiratory hazards associated with urban city dwelling. Relatively little is known about the long-term health effects of urban living in normal young adults. We investigated the prevalence of respiratory symptoms and serum IgE levels in 270 normal individuals between 20-40 of age with no self-reported respiratory symptoms of asthma. The subjects were drawn. from a two-stage random sample of 457 life-time urban dwellers in Bombay. lgE levels were significantly elevated in 33% of subjects (>525 KU IgE/L). Individuals with increased levels of IgE (15%) admitted to having wheezed at least once in the previous year, compared to 5% with normal IgE levels. On the other hand 30% of subjects with increased IgE levels had at least one positive skin prick test compared to 18% with normal IgE levels. All subjects in the study group had a normal spirometry. We conclude that there is a high prevalence of atopy in asymptomatic subjects in the population exposed to urban air pollutants we studied.
