Description:Asthma fRom, William N.ork is a large and growing problem in the United States and other industrialized countries. Approximately 9 million U.S. workers are occupationally exposed to known sensitizers and irritants associated with asthma. Among adults, asthma initiated or exacerbated by workplace exposures is the most prevalent occupational lung disease, surpassing the traditional dust diseases. In recent surveys among adults, work-related asthma accounts for 18% to 30% of all asthma cases. People with asthma fRom, William N.ork often develop persistent disease which frequently results in long-term disability, even after removal from specific causative agents. Long-term unemployment is another unfortunate but common association with asthma fRom, William N.ork. In response to this large and growing problem, NIOSH is developing a comprehensive multidisciplinary program of surveillance, research, and intervention to improve prevention of occupational asthma. The development and pursuit of this program has particular challenges: asthma fRom, William N.ork has a myriad of causes and a wide range of manifestations; there is significant underrecognition and under-reporting of asthma fRom, William N.ork; exposure-response relationships are poorly understood; hazard recognition, identification, and monitoring are limited; traditional approaches to workplace regulation, inspection, and enforcement are unlikely to be fully successful; the adequacy of personal protective equipment has not been evaluated in many settings; and the effectiveness of potentially health-protective training and education has not been assessed. This presentation describes the approach being taken by NIOSH to define and develop an asthma prevention program and describes the current scope and direction of the effort.
