• Description:
  A NIOSH training course on the recognition of occupational health hazards is reviewed. The course is an introduction to the field of industrial hygiene for persons who will be responsible for identifying and evaluating problems in the industrial environment. The objective of the course is the identification of potential biological, chemical, environmental, or physical hazards, and the application of proper concepts and terminology to the evaluation of surveys of industrial processes. The fundamentals of industrial hygiene and surveying techniques are presented with a focus on the walk through survey. Course modules include an introduction to industrial hygiene, biological modes of entry for foreign matter into the body, toxicity of chemical agents, pathology of occupational diseases, industrial hygiene survey procedures, epidemiologic factors, procedures for toxicity evaluations, and standards development and application. Also presented are descriptions of pneumoconiosis and its prevention, chemical hazards, and occupational skin diseases. Hazards from physical agents including electromagnetic and ionizing radiation and noise are assessed.
