Injury rates in agriculture in Finland.

  Employment accident insurance (workers compensation) has been in effect in since 1982 and it covers practically all farmers in Finland. This enables population based statistical data collection. There were 141,886 insured farmers in 1996; 84,925 of them were male and 56,961 female. 7,461 work injuries were compensated to males and 2,617 to females. The injury rate (injuries/100 workers) was 8.5 for males, 4.5 for females and 6.9 overall. The injury rate was highest in the <20 year age group (23 males/40females) and remained relatively uniform in other age groups. The average length of disability was 9 days in <20 year olds and 54 days in 70-80 year olds. Farmers are injured once in 14 years based on the population injury rate. However, farmers who were injured in 1996 had 0.42 injuries per year during the time they had been insured. This is equivalent to one injury every 2.4 years. This reflects the variation in personal injury experience. Multivariate analysis showed that years insured, farm income, age, sex, type of farm work, and employment income help predict the personal injuries/year ratio (p=0.01), however only 14% of the variation is explained by these factors.
