Description:This Conference is sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The theme of our Conference is "Building State Capacities to Assure Safe and Healthful Working Conditions for All." The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 enunciated a historically unprecedented vision when it expressed the will of Congress to "assure so far as possible, every working man and woman in the Nation safe and healthful working conditions." To make this vision a reality is the shared responsibility of every professional in occupational safety and health. Our success depends on a vigorous and well-coordinated effort by people in both public and private sectors. To meet the challenges of the 21st century, states must play a vital role in the prevention of occupational injury, disease, disability and death. The time has come when all that we know about prevention is shared by all who can actually do prevention. With that in mind, we conceived this Conference as a forum for presenting the results of state-based efforts in occupational health and safety. We want this exchange of information to be beneficial to all participants, and we seek to facilitate the best possible federal, state, and local occupational health and safety programs. This book contains a complete schedule of daily activities of the conference.
