• Description:
  The objective of the engineering controls for construction study is to provide the construction industry with information about practical, effective engineering controls and work methods which minimize worker exposures to process-generated air contaminants. To develop this information, existing control technologies must be identified and evaluated in their work environment. As required, new engineering controls should be developed and similarly evaluated. Evaluation criteria should not only include contaminant control effectiveness, but it should additionally include worker acceptability and an ergonomic evaluation. In order to minimize cross-site variability during control evaluations, attempts to create near-identical processes conducted in the same environments by the same workers are desired. Distribution of the study results, conclusions, and recommendations will be disseminated to workers, trade unions, training centers, equipment manufacturers, and to safety and health professionals.
