Description:Low back pain in nursing personnel is a common and well documented event that is associated with a variety of their work activities. One of the more commonly implicated activities is patient/resident handling. In brief, the problem is that the loads they handle (people) are heavy, they move unpredictably, and the nursing personnel cannot drop the load if it gets out of control. This leads to both overexertion and sudden movement induced back injuries. One recommended control measure for this problem is the use of a mechanical handling device to lift and move the people. This study, which was conducted in a laboratory, investigated the biomechanical loading associated with the traditional manual and mechanical device methods of patient/resident handling. The study also investigated the psychophysical responses of the nursing personnel to the different handling methods.
