Description:An evaluation of an agricultural environmental enclosure was conducted at the Nelson Manufacturing Company (SIC-5083, SIC-3523), a maker of retrofit cabs for tractors, with the objectives of evaluating the effectiveness of the filter system, identifying aerosol size distribution inside and outside the enclosure, evaluating air infiltration into the cab by identifying potential leak sources, and evaluating the protection factor. The finding indicated that the cab was more than 99% efficient at removing aerosols larger than 3.0 micrometers in diameter and providing protection factors greater than 250 for particles larger than 3.0 micrometers. The cab provided a mean protection factor of 16 for aerosols smaller than 1.0 micrometer in diameter. The efficiency of the cab's filtration system decreased as the particle size decreased below 2 micrometers, indicating there may be some leakage of small particles into the cab. The cab remained under positive pressure during the study at an average of 0.3 inches of water. This positive pressure reduces the possibility of aerosols entering the cab other than around the filters in the ventilation system. There is also a chance that some of the small aerosols found inside the can may be entering by the blowers or generated from the operator movement inside the cab.
