Preliminary survey report: control technology for manual transfer of chemical powders at Porcelain Metals Corporation, Louisville, Kentucky.

  The Porcelain Metals Corporation (SIC-3269), Louisville, Kentucky was visited as part of a study of dust control during the manual handling of dry chemical powders and the manual transfer of those materials to some type of processing device. The facility employed 97 workers and operated one shift per day, 5 days a week manufacturing porcelain and metal stampings. Raw materials in use on site included frit, silica (14808607) and clays. The facility used some general exhaust ventilation to remove or dilute air contaminants generated during the processing of the dry materials. The ventilation designs did not appear to be based on the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienist's Ventilation Manual. Workers were encouraged to use good work practices and were provided instruction when they started the job. Employees were given preemployment physicals and annual hearing tests. The company provided hearing protection, safety glasses, and hard hats for use throughout the facility and gloves and dust masks for use in specific areas or operations. The author concluded that the facility had a general type of manual batching operation and did not appear to warrant an in depth study.
