  The material in this instructor's manual was designed for use at the college or university level for students in an advanced course on industrial hygiene; this module covered sound. The module was divided into four units. Unit one discussed the physics of sound with lessons dealing with the definition of sound, sound waves, sound pressure, sound power, and sound intensity. Discussions were offered on decibels, sound pressure level, sound power level, and sound intensity level, plus the direct activity factor. Sound in a room, absorption coefficient, noise reduction and transmission loss were considered as well in this unit. Unit two discussed the anatomy and physiology of the ear, the threshold of hearing, and annoyance of noise. Unit three discussed vibration, cause of and methods of controlling vibration, and the effects of vibration on man. Unit four discussed controlling noise in an existing facility at the source and along the path and introduces the use of enclosures. This unit also considered controlling noise at the receiver end.
