Walk-through survey report: control technology for negative pressure rooms at Veterans Administration Hospital, Indianapolis, Indiana.

  A study was made to document and evaluate effective technologies for the control of potential health hazards at the Veterans Administration Hospital (SIC-8062) located in Indianapolis, Indiana. The study evaluated effective ways of maintaining negative pressure in acid fast bacilli (AFB) isolation rooms. Parameters associated with negative pressure isolation rooms were also quantified and the effectiveness of those parameters was evaluated. Five negative pressure isolation rooms and two negative pressure treatment rooms were examined. The patient isolation rooms were all single patient rooms. Both treatment rooms were used for pulmonary techniques such as bronchoscopy. All areas examined used ultraviolet germicidal irradiation lamps. The rooms on the B5 level had fan coil units, in room recirculation units used for conditioning the room air only. Two rooms were provided supply air through diffusers located centrally on the ceiling of the room. One room was located in the medical intensive care unit. This room had a sliding breakaway glass door along one wall and two doorways along another wall, one to the bath and the other to the anteroom. The isolation room exhaust was dedicated to an exhaust fan which was controlled by a switch in the nurses station next to the room.
