Walk-through survey report: control technology for metal reclamation industries at GNB Incorporated, Frisco, Texas.

  A walk through survey was made at the GNB Incorporated (SIC-3341) facility located in Frisco, Texas to identify and evaluate control methods used to reduce lead (7439921) exposure. The company was a secondary lead smelter operating 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. About 20,000 batteries a day were recycled, primarily automobile batteries. Lead and plastic from the batteries were reclaimed. The company used local exhaust ventilation, enclosed ventilated booths, partial enclosures, and automated operations throughout production areas of the site. Various occupational safety and health programs were in place including occupational and safety training, a respirator protection program, various hygiene programs, and blood lead monitoring programs. The potential for exposure to air lead levels greater than 500 micrograms/cubic meter was noted at several locations throughout the facility. These findings will be compared with those from other sites and the facility with the lowest lead exposure levels will be examined carefully so that others may be brought in line with the best of standards.
