Description:A study was made to document and evaluate effective technologies for the control of potential health hazards at Springdale Cleaners (SIC- 7216), Cincinnati, Ohio. The establishment was a large commercial dry cleaner, using an average of 30 gallons of perchloroethylene (127184) per month, cleaning 1,400 pounds of clothing per day. There were 25 employees. Both transfer and dry to dry machines were used at this location. In general, the controls in operation at this facility appeared to be able to maintain exposure levels below the 25 parts per million (ppm) level. There was one instance where levels exceeded 25ppm, but this may have been due to inadequate local ventilation around the door which was allowing vapors to escape from a particular machine. The author concludes that this location would be appropriate for an in depth study, with specific attention being paid to the efficiency of the vapor recovery system in use, real time analysis of manual tasks, residual emissions, and fault tree analysis of the operation.
