Description:The development of small, lightweight, rugged instruments which can be introduced into field applications for detecting biological aerosols was discussed. In immunological based sensors, antibodies are bound to either optical or electrochemical transducers. Fluorescent dyes or chromogenic enzyme substrates may be used for the transduction of optical signals. With an electrochemical sensor, enzyme/substrate combinations which yield electrochemically active species may be used. The Light Addressable Potentiometric Sensor and the Bio-Chemical Detector were described. The CBMS system used Quadrapole Ion Storage technology and allowed bacterial identification to the level of genus. The authors conclude that the biospecificity approach needs a lot of up front work in the development of biological reagents while the other approach requires a significant amount of work in the development of appropriate spectral libraries. Both systems show great promise.
