Description:A gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) system using a microbore column and a miniaturized mass spectrograph with an array detector was developed for use in field measurements of pollutants. The performance of this system in the analysis of mixtures of priority pollutants was demonstrated. A short microbore column, when combined with the MS/electrooptical ion detector resolved the early eluted gases satisfactorily. The system possessed high sensitivity and a linear dynamic range greater than 1000. The minimum detectable quantity for benzene (71432) corresponded to 40 parts per million in a sample volume of 0.5 microliters. Larger sample volumes allowed measurement of lower concentrations. The author suggests that the combination of a microbore column and a miniaturized focal plane mass spectrograph is eminently suited for field measurements. The extremely small carrier gas flow rate drastically reduced the mass and power needs of the mass spectrograph.
