Description:Practical gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) field methods which require only minimal cleanup of the sample were described for use at hazardous waste sites. A Bruker Instruments mobile mass spectrometer powered by battery or electrical supply from the site was transported to Superfund sites by truck. Analyte introduction for quantitative measurements was made by coinjecting organic extracts of polychlorinated biphenyls, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or pesticides and internal standards onto an aluminum covered petri dish followed by thermal desorption GC/MS and for screening measurements by direct thermal desorption from soil/sediment. Results of studies indicated that GC/MS can be operated in the field, provide rapid access of data, and allow project managers to make decisions on site.
