In-depth survey report: the control of methylene chloride in furniture stripping at the J. M. Murray Center, Inc., Cortland, New York.

  A prototype furniture stripping tank was evaluated for its ability to control exposure to methylene-chloride (75092) during the stripping process at the J. M. Murray Center, Inc. (SIC-8331), Cortland, New York. This company was a private, nonprofit corporation that employed disabled workers in furniture manufacturing and other tasks. The prototype tank included a solution recycling system with a downdraft ventilation system. Worker personal protective equipment included chemical splash goggles, an apron, and shoulder length gloves. Area and personal air samples for methylene-chloride were obtained while operating the prototype tank at three different exhaust volumes. Personal breathing samples fRom, William N.orkers exposed to methylene-chloride ranged from 18 parts per million (ppm) using a high exhaust volume setting to 96ppm using a low exhaust volume setting. The OSHA permissible exposure limit to methylene-chloride was 500ppm as an 8 hour time weighted average. The author concludes that the prototype system is an effective means of minimizing exposure to methylene-chloride during furniture stripping operations. The author recommends that the facility use the furniture stripping tank with the highest exhaust volume setting and continue to provide personal protective equipment to workers.
