  This testimony concerned the views of NIOSH regarding the proposed rule on occupant protection in motor vehicles and provided information which will assist OSHA in developing a final standard. NIOSH studies have indicated that motor vehicle traffic accidents are the leading cause of occupational deaths due to traumatic injuries. Driver safety awareness training designed to promote the use of safety devices as well as familiarization with other vehicle safety systems was an essential component in achieving full compliance with safety belt and helmet use requirements. Information was also presented which suggested that alcohol and drug use may play a role in occupationally related motor vehicle deaths and injuries. It was noted that NIOSH strongly supports the efforts of OSHA in proposing rulemaking in this area of occupational health and safety.
