In-depth survey report: evaluation of the Aero-Pipe Capsule (Negative Pressure Glove Bag) during the removal of asbestos-containing pipe lagging, at the Dore and Associates Contracting, Inc., Bay City, Michigan, and at asbestos removal site in Dearborn, Michigan.

  A study was made to document and evaluate effective techniques for the control of potential health hazards arising during the removal of asbestos (1332214) containing pipe lagging. Worker exposure which occurred when the Aero-Pipe Capsule was used for the asbestos containing pipe lagging were well below the OSHA PEL and the NIOSH REL criteria. Data from transmission electron microscope analyzes indicated that there may have been an increase in total fibers as a result of the asbestos removal procedure. The authors conclude that workers should use respiratory protection and disposable coveralls when using the Aero-Pipe Capsule for asbestos removal operations. This would provide protection against accidental releases of asbestos which may occur because of the loss of vacuum, seal failure, or the rupture of a bag. Backup containment or isolation of the working area may also be needed to avoid contamination of the surroundings should an accident occur or where preexisting contamination may be disturbed. Sampling in an aggressive mode should be accomplished to estimate the amount of contamination present before removal operations. This can help establish the need for additional precautions.
