Pneumoconiosis of delayed apparition: large scaled screening in a population of retired coal miners of the northern coal fields of France.

  The results of a large scaled pneumoconiosis screening in a population of retired coal miners from the northern coal fields of France were presented. Screening was carried out from 1983 to 1986. Retired miners were selected on the basis of the following criteria: absence of radiological evidence of pneumoconiosis at the time of retirement; duration of dust exposure equal to or greater than five years; and cessation of exposure for at least three years without consideration of age. The reading of 3070 radiographs from retired miners revealed 1463 subnormal radiographs; 514 opacities sequelae of prior diseases such as tuberculosis, pleural affections, and bronchopneumonic diseases and thoracic traumas; 315 evolutive nonpneumoconiotic thoracic affections such as tuberculosis, cardiovascular affections, scleroemphysema, aspergilloma, and lung carcinomas; and 741 new cases of characterized pneumoconiosis. The subnormal x-rays consisted of an increase of linear shadows of the lungs, small calcifications, sequelae of tuberculosis, or a certain degree of fibrosis alone or in association with fine round opacities. Two cases of evident delayed development of pneumoconiosis were presented.
