Programme for intervention against asbestos related diseases in the county of Telemark, Norway.

  A risk based intervention program for controlling asbestos (1332214) related lung cancer in Telemark county, Norway, was discussed. The lung cancer incidence in males living in Telemark county was about 30% higher than in the general Norwegian population. The total male population of the county was approximately 80000. It was estimated that 11000 to 12000 persons living in the county had been exposed to asbestos. An intervention program for reducing the risk of asbestos related lung cancer was set up. It consisted of two components. The first component was an information intervention for current smokers who had a history of asbestos exposure in which counseling was provided to reduce the lung cancer risk. Participants in the program were persons who were estimated to have lung cancer risk five times that of the general population. The second component was an intensive screening program for lung cancer among current and former smokers who had a history of asbestos exposure and who were deemed to have a risk of lung cancer at least ten times that of the general population. Participants who had an estimated annual lung cancer risk of greater than 80x10(-4) were to be screened by two angle pulmonary X-rays every 4 months and annually with 3 day exfoliate cytology examinations. Persons whose yearly lung cancer risk was estimated to be less than 80x10(-4) were to be screened biannually by the two angle pulmonary X-rays. It was expected that most of the persons given the lung cancer screening would be 50 to 69 years old.
