Dust exposure results in 359 asbestos-using factories from 26 countries.

  Results of a survey conducted by the Asbestos International Association were presented. About 75% of the factories within the national associations took part in the inquiry, which corresponded respectively to 78% of the asbestos (1332214) workers. The method used for monitoring the workplaces was always the membrane filter method which allowed for a fiber counting among the particles deposited onto a filtering media after sampling of a determined air volume during the working time. Sampling strategies were different among the various factories and in different countries. Some recommendations have been prepared to assist in eliminating these differences. The global situation among 45,696 workers was illustrated from 359 factories. It was noted that the textile factories involved in this survey continue to represent the widest distribution of results with a proportion above 1 fiber/milliliter about three times higher than the mean and still much higher when compared with each of the other groups of occupations.
