Description:An investigation was conducted to explore the relationship between asbestos bodies (AB) concentration in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid on the one hand and the occupational history, the presence of benign pleural changes, and the presence of primary bronchogenic carcinoma, on the other hand. The concentrations of ABs in lavage fluid ranged from 0.01 to 130/milliliter and appeared to follow a logarithmic distribution in this sample of 275 patients. These subjects were categorized into five groups according to occupation. Eleven were asbestos workers; 50 metal workers, welders, plumbers, and heating workers; 47 coal miners; 103 other blue collar workers; and 46 farmers, staff, and other white collar workers. Metal workers had significantly higher AB counts when compared with an equal number of matched referents. The same was true for coal miners. Subjects with bilateral pleural changes had significantly higher AB counts than their matched referents. Subjects with unilateral, pleural changes did not differ significantly from the referents. The patients with primary bronchogenic carcinoma had a higher mean AB concentration than matched referents, but the difference was not significant. The highest levels of AB concentrations were noted in the asbestos workers.
