Inhaled corticosteroids in the treatment of occupational respiratory diseases (O.R.D.).

  An investigation was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the inhaled corticosteroids in the treatment of occupational respiratory diseases. The investigation involved 15 patients aged 28 to 66 years. Nine had a consistent occupational history of exposition to mineral dusts (five to silica (14808607), three to iron (7439896), and one to asbestos (1332214)), and six to organic dust (three to cork dust and three to pigeon droppings). Prior to treatment all patients had complaints of exertion dyspnea, 93% experienced cough, 53% expectoration, and 46% wheezing. All patients were treated with Budesonide 4x200 micrograms twice a day, via a 750 milliliter spacer. After 3 months of treatment the clinical evaluation stated an improvement in 80% of the patients. The only side effects were two cases of mild sore throats and one of hoarseness. The results provided some evidence of the effectiveness of the proposed treatment, mainly in the interstitial occupational respiratory diseases.
