Educational standards-setting programs of the ACR task force on pneumoconiosis in support of NIOSH.

  The role of the American College of Radiology (ACR) task force on pneumoconiosis in support of NIOSH activities was discussed. The task force was created in 1970 to assist NIOSH in solving problems associated with implementing the Coal Mine Health and Safety (CMHS) Act. The CMHS Act established a national surveillance program for active coal miners and a compensation programs for former miners or their survivors. The ACR pneumoconiosis task force developed programs for setting standards for physicians and medical facilities to participate in the surveillance program, developed new teaching methods to acquaint radiologists and other physicians with the radiographic manifestations of coal workers' pneumoconiosis and how to use the International Labour Office classification system, and developed a healthy climate of cooperation between NIOSH and other federal agencies and interested physicians in several appropriate disciplines. Specific activities of the ACR pneumoconiosis task force in the areas of standard setting, physician education, and liaison were described.
