Description:A survey was presented which attempted to characterized the exposure of turn around workers to various chemical agents. Over 40 chemicals were identified and quantified during this evaluation. Chemicals having the most potential for exposure in excess of current standards included nitrogen-dioxide (10102440) (NO2), chromium(VI) (18540299), nickel (7440020) (Ni), and coal-tar pitch volatiles (CTPVs). NO2 concentrations ranged from 10.0 to 321.1 parts per million (ppm), with a geometric mean of 35.2ppm at various welding operations. The OSHA time weighted average exposure limit has been listed as 5ppm. Air concentrations of hexavalent chromium compounds were noted to be in excess of the NIOSH recommended standards, 0.025mg/m3 for water soluble and 0.001mg/m3 for certain water insoluble forms, at welding operations. Ni air concentrations were in excess of the NIOSH recommended limits, 0.015 mg/m3 for metal and soluble compounds, at welding operations, reactor cleaning operations, kiln cleaning operations and in catalyst cleaning operations. CTPVs in air were in excess of the 0.1mg/m3 at residual cleaning operations. This survey also provided recommendations for air monitoring, use of protective clothing and equipment, checking of ventilation rates and directions and evaluation of work practices.
