  A walk through survey was conducted on December 12, 1983, of Lederle Laboratories Division of the American Cyanamid Company (SIC-2834), Pearl River, New York. The survey was performed to determine the suitability of including Lederle in an industry wide mortality and industrial hygiene study of workers potentially exposed to ethylene- oxide (75218) (EtO) in industrial sterilization processes. Personal and area sampling for EtO had been conducted at this site since 1978. The facility was noted to also meet all other requirements for inclusion in the larger study, in that it would contribute at least 400 person years to the effort, has adequate personnel or other records to identify past and present workers exposed to EtO, and has no serious confounding exposure to a known leukemogen. Based on the walk through visit the authors recommend that the syringe machine operations be isolated in order to reduce the operators' exposure levels to EtO. The industrial hygiene monitoring program presently under use should be continued in force.
